Design

Both the 2022 Kia EV6 and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 are built on the same platform, making them similar in overall design and performance. The Kia EV6 is slightly slimmer, giving it a modern and luxurious design. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 has a box-shaped design with a sleek profile. The EV6 is lighter than the Ioniq 5 and is designed with careful aerodynamic contours and lines to optimize overall efficiency.

Powertrain

The 2022 Kia EV6 comes powered standard by a 58.0-kWh battery. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 features a standard 58.2-kWh battery. There are also a few differences in the upgradable powertrain and batteries available with each option. The Ioniq 5 offers two long-range options, a 72.6 kWh and a 77.4 kWh. The Kia EV6 has only one long-range powertrain.

Both EVs offer instant acceleration and come on an 800-volt battery system with the choice of either a single, rear-wheel-drive motor or an all-wheel-drive, dual-motor. Both have a peak power of 125 kW when equipped with the standard powertrain.

Range

Powertrain and battery setups may be less important when comparing EVs than range. Range refers to the number of miles each EV can go between charging. The 2022 Kia EV6 offers slightly more range than the Hyundai Ioniq 5 with 310 miles versus 303 miles. It’s also important to note that both of these maximum ranges are with the upgraded powertrain of each vehicle. The Kia EV6 also offers more range at the lower-priced package with a total of 232 miles of range versus the Hyundai Ioniq’s 220 miles per range.

When comparing miles per gallon electric (MPGe), the EV6 also wins by a few miles with 117 MPGe compared to the 110 MPGe in the Ioniq 5. Whereas the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) uses a combined value, you can further break fuel economy down by highway or city driving. The 2022 Kia EV6 offers 136 MPGe city driving and 100 MPGe highway driving, versus the Hyundai Ioniq 5 which offers 127 MPGe for city driving and 94 MPGe for highway driving.

Charging Capabilities

Whether you choose the Kia EV6 or the Hyundai Ioniq 5, you can expect fast charging capabilities. Both EVs feature the world’s first multi-high-speed charging system. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 not only offers a few charging methods for your car but also your home devices with a two-way onboard charger. The available wireless device charger also keeps your smartphone and other technologies charged. With the ultra-fast charging dock, you can quickly get up to 60-miles in just five minutes or less.

The EV6 also prioritizes fast charging with both 400-volt and 800-volt charging options. At-home charging is available with Kia with the 11kw onboard charger. You can also use the Kia Connect app to review your current charging status so you know when you have enough power to leave. The EV6 also comes with an available power generator that allows you to charge your devices on the go, like laptops or tablets.

Hyundai uses a large charging network called Electrify America, which comes with a free membership for the first two years. The Electrify America Network currently includes over 700 public chargers across the United States. Kia EV6 drivers may have an easier time finding a charging station. Kia uses a network of fast-chargers that currently spans over 41,000 stations across the U.S.

Interior Features

While both the Kia EV6 and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 offer a fuel-efficient drive, it’s also important to compare the interiors. In the Ioniq 5, you can expect high-quality materials throughout with the same futuristic theme as the exterior. The customizable center console slides back and forth, giving you more space in the cabin.

The futuristic dashboard is made with magnetic materials, so you can proudly show off your physical photographs. The interior of the 2022 Kia EV6 is designed with vegan leather materials and heated, ventilated seats. The driver-focused interior of the EV6 connects you to all the technologies you need for the ride.

Technologies

Technology is important when choosing a vehicle today. The Kia EV6 is a little more technology-focused with dual-curved screens and an available augmented reality head-up display screen. Both EVs are Apple CarPlay and Android compatible, keeping you connected on the road. Whereas the Ioniq 5 uses Bluelink car services and Remote Profile Management, the Kia EV6 uses the proven UVO Suite. The Kia EV6 also features Kia Pay, which allows you to find and pay for parking, all from inside of your vehicle.

Both Kia and Hyundai use technology to improve the safety of each EV. Whereas Hyundai has Hyundai SmartSense, Kia has Kia Drive Wise. Hyundai SmartSense includes features like navigation-based cruise control with curve detection, intelligent speed limit assist, and smart cruise control. Kia also features its own impressive, intuitive safety features. Kia Drive Wise includes features like a surround-view monitor, remote smart parking assist, and forward collision avoidance assist.

Both vehicles also come with Highway Driving Assist 2, which helps drivers maintain a safe distance between their vehicle and the one in front of them.

2022 Kia EV6 vs Hyundai Ioniq 5: Which is Right For Me?

Both the 2022 Kia EV6 and the Hyundai Inoiq 5 have a lot to offer. However, if you’re seeking an EV that is stylish, offers great performance, and is loaded with the latest technologies, the Kia EV6 may be a better choice.
