Pittsburgh Blue Steakhouse

Pittsburgh Blue Steakhouse is a locally owned chain of steakhouses with locations in Rochester, Edina, and Maple Grove. The steakhouse serves wet-aged beef that’s been hand-cut by master butchers, as well as fresh seafood and burgers. It’s open every afternoon at 4 p.m. for Happy Hour, but you can order ahead for takeout if you don’t feel like eating in.

The menu features appetizers, soups and side salads, entree salads, traditional cuts of steak, proprietary steaks, different types of proteins, and sides with a twist. There’s also a menu section devoted entirely to filet mignon prepared in a variety of ways, including with a blue cheese crust, topped with a lump crab cake, and mushroom-capped. The star of the menu is the salt-crusted prime rib that’s aged for 21 days, slow-roasted with sea salt and herbs, and served with au jus and horseradish sauce.

The restaurant features an extensive wine list that pairs perfectly with the different menu items, while traditional and house cocktails are also available. Make sure to check out the dessert menu to complete your dining experience.

Pappy’s Place

Pappy’s Place is an old-school bar and grill that focuses on serving great food and creating a comfortable setting. Come here for the food, then stay a while to relax in an atmosphere designed for good company and memorable times. You’ll find a well-stocked bar, plenty of local and national brews on tap, and even a salad bar. Pappy’s menu primarily focuses on gourmet hamburgers, but you’ll find quality steaks on offer regularly. Every Saturday is Prime Thyme, consisting of well-aged beef prime rib, slow-cooked and served with soup, sides, and salads.

The steaks are found in the Pappy’s Plates section of the menu. Your choices include a filet mignon served with sauteed mushrooms, a petite filet served over balsamic glaze, and a ribeye steak topped with herbed butter, all hand-cut and cooked to your liking. There’s also a steak and shrimp platter when you feel like mixing it up. If you decide you want something other than steak, you can peruse the extensive burger menu with options that include The Hangover, Peanut Butter, Swiss & Fungi, Smoked House burgers, and many more.

Pescara

Pescara is a steak and seafood restaurant located in the Double Tree Hotel in downtown Rochester. It’s part of a local restaurant group and serves meals from morning to evening. The breakfast and lunch menus focus primarily on light meals to get you through the day, while the dinner menu offers options like steak. All menus are straightforward and offer plates ranging from appetizers, small plates, starters, and entrees.

The steak menu is limited, but what’s on offer is complemented with ingredients that enhance the flavor and texture of the cut. Select the 14-ounce ribeye to enjoy a locally sourced cut of Angus beef coated in a beef demi-glace and garlic butter and accompanied by smoked gouda hash browns and broccolini. The petite filet “Forestera” comes coated with a truffled demi-glace and spring ramp butter and is served with toasted shallot mashed potatoes and forest mushrooms.

Canadian Honker

The Canadian Honker Restaurant has been serving meals made from scratch for almost 40 years in Rochester. It’s located across the street from St. Mary’s Hospital and provides a comfortable atmosphere for diners looking for a home-cooked meal, the opportunity to enjoy live music, and sit outside during nice weather. Food is served from morning to evening, with steaks available at lunch and dinner.

Although the menu only offers two choice cuts of steak, the restaurant focuses on making them stand out. The filet mignon is hand-cut in-house, topped with garlic herb butter, and served with soup or salad and a choice of potato. Prime rib is offered every Saturday after 4:30 p.m. and comes in an 8-ounce or 12-ounce cut. It’s also served with garlic herb butter, soup or salad, and potato. Chopped sirloin topped with sauteed onions is also available for those who want the taste of a steak but not a whole cut.

Olde Brick House

The Olde Brick House restaurant brings a bit of the U.K. to Rochester with its menu filled with traditional English fare. The restaurant is located in The Kahler Grand Hotel, where you’ll find a cozy interior that invites you to sit down for a while and relax for lunch or dinner. Even though the menu focuses on British-style cuisine, it also offers steaks, pretzels, burgers, pasta, and tacos.

The steak options include a flat iron steak that’s pan-seared and topped with winey mushrooms and Jameson-seared onions and served over champ potatoes and chef’s vegetables. The 14-ounce ribeye steak is presented similarly but is topped with herb butter. The aged tenderloin is freshly cut, house-seasoned, and seared in garlic butter. It’s served on a bed of wild rice pilaf and topped off with Guinness mushroom gravy and Boursin butter.

When you want beef but not a steak, the Guinness cheesesteak sandwich delivers sliced ribeye on a New England brioche bun, topped with winey mushrooms, fried onion straws, and Guinness cheese sauce.
