The 2022 Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade are fierce competitors, both being three-row midsize SUVs that made their debut in the 2020 model year. The race to the 2022 model has improved on both models,  with the new Telluride providing affordable features and stellar interior technology options. Here are the key similarities and differences between these SUVs, including specifications and exterior attributes.

Similarities Between the Kia Telluride and the Hyundai Palisade

These two models have a few key similarities. One reason for this is that Hyundai became the parent company of Kia in 1998, and they share many of the same automobile technologies as a result.  For instance, all Telluride and Palisade trim levels are powered by a 3.8-liter V-6 engine that outputs 291 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. Each boasts an eight-speed automatic transmission and comes standard with front-wheel drive, though all-wheel drive is an available upgrade.

The cars also have the same drivetrain options and similar security features, including blind-spot collision avoidance, parking distance warning, and safe exit assist. However, there are some differences between these two models that put the Kia Telluride a little further ahead in the race to midsize SUV class dominance.

Technology

One of the biggest turning points in this competition is each model’s standard cabin technologies. The 2022 Telluride comes standard with an impressively large 10.25-inch touch screen with a built-in navigation system, which is a feature that other vehicles only provide in their upper trim levels.

This central touch screen is compatible with the Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration system, allowing you to use your phone hands-free and without looking at it. Whether you’re texting your friends, playing the latest episode of your favorite podcast, or searching for directions to your kids’ favorite pizza place after school, all you have to do is select your favorite phone app on the touch screen or use a button mounted on the steering wheel to use voice commands.

The Hyundai Palisade, on the other hand, comes standard with an 8-inch screen instead. Though it offers the same smartphone connectivity, drivers looking for multiple display screen features and an ultramodern experience may want to stick to the Telluride. The Kia’s 10.25-inch screen is available to the Palisade at the SEL trim level if you get one equipped with the Convenience and Premium packages. The Telluride’s second-tier S trim level also comes standard with a wireless phone charger, while it’s available in the Palisade’s second-tier SEL model if you purchase the Convenience Package.

All-Weather Readiness

Both the Telluride and Palisade give you plenty of features to allow you to stay comfortable when the weather goes south. This includes customizable dual-zone automatic climate control, which allows passengers sitting on both sides of the SUV to choose their ideal temperature at the push of a button.

The Kia Telluride comes standard with dual-zone climate control on all trim levels. A rear-row automatic climate control system is also standard for all Tellurides. The Palisade introduces dual-zone climate control at the second-tier SEL level.

Both models offer heated front seats at their second trim levels and ventilated front seats at their third trim levels. Equip your Telluride with heated and ventilated second-row seats by purchasing the luxurious SX, the vehicle’s top-level trim, alongside the SX Prestige Package. The 2022 Palisade also offers heated second-row seats with the SEL when you add the optional Convenience and Premium packages.

Something to keep in mind is that the top-tier Telluride SX is more affordable than the Palisade’s third-level trim — the Limited. If you want these adventure-ready features without having to invest even more money in your new SUV, the Telluride may have the best of both worlds.

Cabin Space

Another aspect to keep in mind as you try to decide between these two models is how much space you want in your SUV. both models are three-row SUVs, but the Telluride offers more overall space for your passengers than the Palisade. The Telluride has 178.1 cubic feet of passenger volume and the Palisade has 155.3 cubic feet. The extra space may be especially helpful if you’re taking the kids back and forth from school or bringing friends on a long drive.

If you’re more concerned with cargo volume, the Telluride wins this competition as well. All trim levels offer 21 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, 46 cubic feet behind the second row, and 87 cubic feet behind the first when you fold down the two rear rows. Compare this to the Palisade, which offers 18 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, 45.8 cubic feet behind the second row, and 86.4 cubic feet behind the first.

Is this because the Telluride is the larger vehicle? It is, but not by much at all — it simply uses its space more efficiently than the Palisade. For example, the standard Telluride LX measures 196.9 inches long, 68.9 high, and 78.3 inches wide. The Palisade, meanwhile, measures 196.1 inches long, 68.9 inches high, and 77.8 inches wide without the side mirrors.

Exterior Allure

With so many similarities between the 2022 Telluride and 2022 Palisade, what may be the biggest deciding factor is their exterior styles. This is where the SUVs most significantly diverge.

Both are handsome SUVs, but they take different stylistic routes. The Telluride is more focused on a rugged, yet elegant charm with its long black mesh tiger-nose grille and simple curved body. The Palisade aims more for the luxury family-friendly SUV look with its chromed accents, swooping lines, and wide-set stance on the road. Simply put, the Telluride looks as though it promises road trip adventures while the Palisade looks more at home tucked between downtown skyscrapers.
